Sigh... And where am I going to go now when I need help on VC++
language? Truly devastating :-(

...what do you mean you can still see my post? <g>

Usenet has survived quite a few servers' being removed, and it's still
doing OK. If you want to continue coming here, just change your server
to something other than 'msnews.microsoft.com' and keep reading/posting.

Oh shoot! Microsoft will excommunicate me now, for sure... What have I
done! <sad face, arms protracted to heavens>.. Is there salvation?

Didn't they consider how utterly fast and convenient NNTP is?

You don't have to be a member/login. You can keep what you want and purge the
rest, not having to deal with thousands of threads every time you read. It's
plain text.

Compared to usenet with a decent news reader, navigating those MS forums (all
web-based forums) is a nightmare.

While MS may not host these groups any longer, I sincerely hope they remain
active.

They kind of sort of did:

http://connect.microsoft.com/Microsoftforums/

There's also an open-source equivalent of that, said to work much better that Microsoft's offering (I haven't gotten around to trying it myself yet, though):

With sufficient thrust, pigs fly just fine. However, this is not necessarily a good idea. It is hard to be sure where they are going to land, and it could be dangerous sitting under them as they fly overhead. -- RFC 1925

No doubt that'll take the fast and convenient out of it.

Tried this one and it sort of works for some definition of works
but you have to run a separate "server" on your desk before
opening your newsreader. And then, none of the ms.p.* groups
are there. And it's pretty slow.

Aside from that, it lets you use a newsreader interface instead of
the crummy web based thing so it has some value.

Right, so you are in control, and they are not. Is that good?
